What Is Botox And How Long Does It Last?

Botox is the trade name for Onobotulinumtoxin A, an injectable substance that is used to paralyze specific muscles by blocking the nerve signals to those muscles. It is derived from Clostridium botulinum. Botox, Leuveau, Dysport, and Xeomin are the four different types that are approved by the FDA for cosmetic facial wrinkles.

As the signal to a particular muscle is blocked, that muscle does not contract. As contraction of the muscle is prevented, no or less muscle activity leaves no effect on the skin and hence, there is no significant formation of wrinkles.

All four types provide you with the same results. The difference is in terms of discomfort and duration of action.

Now, which one of these four should you use, this depends on several factors. Sometimes, it is the preference of OC plastic surgeon or injector. In some cases, the patient has already tried different products. The patient knows what works better for her. So, it can be the patient’s personal choice as well. All four types are safe and effective when in the right hands.

What To Expect?

First of all, the surgeon or injector discusses your goals. This is followed by some necessary tests and examinations. The surgeon assesses the results to make sure that your goals are achievable with Botox or not. If you are lucky, the surgeon will give you a nod.
The surgeon then cleanses your face and mark the area to be injected with a marker or removable eyeliner. Ice packs or numbing cream can also be applied to help with any discomfort. Depending on the muscles to be targeted, the surgeon will perform injections in various areas.
You should expect a few small bumps at the sites of injections. However, these small bumps will go away in no time. Injecting botox can also cause mild bruising. However, this bruising is resolved in 1 or 2 days. In the end, the surgeon will provide you with some instructions you must follow for the next 24 hours. These instructions vary from product to product and injector to injector.

Onset

You are most likely to notice the effects in 3-5 days. However, in many cases, full and final results become noticeable in 7-10 days. Many surgeons advise their patients to wait for 2 weeks after the injection. The toxin takes time to block off the signals to the muscles. Don't expect immediate results.

Duration

We all wish Botox to last forever. However, this is one of the wishes that do not come true. Eventually, the amazing results of Botox will wear-off. The flow of signals to the target muscles is once again restored. Generally, injecting Botox for once can keep your face free from wrinkles for 3-4 months. In some patients, the effects can last longer from 4-6 months. Sometimes, botox works for only 2 months.
Botox does not last long after the first treatment. However, the results will be better after the second treatment. It also depends on the OC plastic surgeon you are working with.
